# Pacing and audio

> Tune how fast the agent talks, how much its tone varies, whether there is background ambience, and how hard it works to hear a caller in a noisy place.

Four settings that sit around the voice. None of them change what the agent says,
only how it lands.

## Speaking speed

How fast the agent talks. Normal is `1`. Lower is slower and calmer, higher is
quicker.

* **Slow down** for older audiences, and for anything with numbers in it: prices,
  addresses, appointment times.
* **Speed up** only a little, if at all. Fast talkers are hard to trust.

<Tip>
  A little secret: **1.1** tends to sound the most human. We cannot fully explain
  why. It just does.
</Tip>

## Expressiveness

How much the voice varies its tone. A little variation sounds alive. Too much
sounds theatrical, which reads as a performance rather than a person. A middle
setting is usually the safe, natural choice.

## Background sound

By default the call is clean and quiet. You can add a light ambience, a soft call
centre or a coffee shop, so it feels less sterile.

Volume runs from **0 to 100, where 50 is the standard level** and 0 is silent.
50 is not half of anything: it is the level the platform plays when nobody has
chosen one, which is why it sits in the middle of the slider. Above 50 the bed
is louder than normal, and 100 is roughly double.

The volume only does anything while a background sound is selected. Turning the
sound off leaves the volume where it was rather than resetting it.

This is optional and easy to overdo. If it is distracting to you on a quiet
listen, it is worse on a phone speaker in a supermarket. When in doubt, leave it
off.

## Noise handling

Real calls are noisy on the **caller's** end, not yours. This setting, shown as
**Denoising mode**, decides how the agent cleans up what it hears. There are
three choices:

* **Remove noise** is the default and suits most calls. It filters out
  background noise before the agent hears the caller.
* **Remove noise + background speech** also drops other people talking near the
  caller. Try it if your leads often call from busy places, but it is stronger
  and can clip the caller's own voice on a noisy line.
* **No denoising** passes the audio through unchanged. Use it when your calls
  are usually clean.

## Do and don't

* **Do** listen to the agent out loud before going live. Your ear catches things
  a settings page never will.
* **Do** match the pace to the audience, slower for detail heavy calls.
* **Don't** push expressiveness to the top. Natural beats dramatic.
* **Don't** add a busy background. If it distracts you, it distracts the caller.

## In the API

* [Update agent](/api-reference/agents/update-agent) sets `voiceSpeed`, `voiceTemperature`, `backgroundSound`, `backgroundSoundVolume` and `denoisingMode`
* [Get agent](/api-reference/agents/get-agent) reads the current values first
* [How your agent sounds](/agents/voice) covers the voice itself
